“I had taken a database management class in school and the instructor briefly touched on SQL.  We did a little project in Access so I was, at least, familiar with using a select statement.  When I signed on at Lupine, I was given a report to write the first week on the job and I had one week to complete it.  I was anxious as my skills were very limited.  I felt that SQL was kind of like a foreign language. I watched the video.  It was like a light bulb went off in my head. Brian starts out by explaining the basics of SQL and incorporates the basic Yardi database schema.   He explains how the Yardi tables are labeled and how they all inter-relate to one another.  This is the crux of writing reports in Yardi – knowing how to get the data and where to find it.  He also describes several of the tables that are consistently used as the foundation for all the reports.  When he begins the section on explaining the SQL commands, Brian includes a description and example of many of the more commonly used commands.  By doing so, he is giving us the tools to create a wide variety of queries. As he explains the SQL commands, he actually takes us through the process of building a report.  The steps are very organized and very clear.  This is helpful when planning to write your own report. By building the report and showing us the process, not only can you follow along by watching but you can write it down so that you can practice doing the steps yourself and compare your results to the results that Brian gets. Another section of the video describes the concept of joins.  Joins are somewhat complicated but necessary in writing a SQL report.  Brian takes the time to explain the different joins in a manner that makes the concept understandable. In my database management class, joins were discussed.  I distinctly remember walking out of class not understanding this concept at all.  As it wasn't going to be tested, I let it go. I remember thinking that maybe I just wasn't smart enough to grasp the concept. Having viewed the section of the video on joins, I see now that it wasn't a matter of me being smart enough but that the concept just wasn't explained well. Finally, Brian includes lots of tips and useful tricks to helping you keep your SQL script organized and readable.   While that task may seem fairly obvious, as you are writing a script that is somewhat complicated, you will find that only after you've got it all working do you realize that it's difficult to read. Brian explains the importance of spacing, organizing and documenting the script so that if you have to go back and make changes or if someone else comes behind you, a recreation of the wheel is required.

David, how much is your SQL report development course?

Why is it so expensive?
That’s the wrong question – you need to think investment.  When viewed properly you need to compare the cost of the program versus the potential cost-saving.  And, also, I’ve already shown you how it is much less expensive (if you want to think in these terms…) than the other course on the market.  You've already spent a lot for this software...your company is wasting its money if they don't use it to its maximum potential.

What if I want to use this material for in-house training like you did?  Is there a license fee?

Do I need any prior knowledge or any special software to apply your training?
