The Enemy of Speed is a Blank Sheet of Paper

The enemy of speed is a blank sheet of paper.

And that is how I get through writing my newsletter each month.  Clients, friends, and family all ask me how I have the time to think this stuff up, write it down, and have it be so blasted entertaining.

Here’s the tip:  You do it all month long.  Everything is potential material.

I have a version of an “in-box”.  Every time I get an idea I put it in my box.  I don’t write about it yet…it just goes in the box.  When I sit down to write this newsletter each month, I go to my box.  The ideas are sitting there, I just have to opine and let it rip.

Actually it isn’t that hard…and is mostly enjoyable.  You just don’t want to start from scratch when it is time to write…I can tell you from personal experience that is a miserable way to spend some time.  Guaranteed to get you surfing the internet…

Another tip is to write to the clock.  I will say to myself that you will be done by X time…and I make it tight.  Your subconscious mind will take over and will make sure that you get it done in time.  It keeps you from dawdling and procrastinating…and over thinking the topic.

Also, this newsletter is an essential part of our business.  Communicating with clients and associates is important – I can tell because of the sheer number of emails I get each month telling me to keep it coming.  Once you view something as essential, then you find time to do it because it is…well, essential.

I read a lot of books each month and belong to a few business coaching groups where ideas are shooting past me constantly.  I just have to be awake enough to catch them as they float by…and to have a system to place the ideas into so they will be waiting for me when I’m ready to start writing.
